17th birthday

We started off Jose’s birthday at one of Ashley’s soccer games.

When the game was over, all of the girls sang happy birthday to Jose. It was sweet. Then we took a couple of other pics after the game. Here are two of my faves, a family shot (which we don’t get very often) and one of Jose and his BFF Jonny.

Since we were already out-of-town, we decided to make day of it. We headed out to eat and met up with some family members who were also out at another soccer game. We were a party of 14. It was a delicious meal. I was so happy that David was eating too. In my last post, I had written about David being sick. So, seeing him eat was wonderful. After our meal we went to the mall. Jose, his friend Jonny and Carlitos went off and did their own thing. Afterwards, we headed home. So, Jose was thinking this was pretty much all we were doing for his birthday, other than having some friends spend the night.

Little did he know…………………………….

That I had this idea in the back of my mind. Every time the boys have friends stay over for their birthdays, we always make sure to have snacks and drinks handy. However, for the last few birthdays, I have been trying out some different ways to make the “spread” look cooler, or more creative. You can read about some other birthday snacks ideas to see what we did for Carlitos’ 18th birthday  or the Happy Birthday Food Cake that I made for Jose’s birthday last year.

This particular birthday is fortnite themed. Pic:1 is supposed to represent what is called a “drop box,” on the video game. The gift that was in side the “drop box” was not Fortnite related though. We got Jose a class of 2019 blanket. At certain times of the year we need to bring blankets along to soccer games, football games etc. Pic:2 is Fortnite cupcakes. Seeing as how we were out-of-town all day, I picked up cupcakes on the way home. I googled “Fornite images” and picked one out that I thought would work well for a cupcake topper. Then I downloaded it, printed them in wallet size, cut them out and tapped them to toothpicks. Pic:3 is Fortnite Slurp Juice. For this, I picked up some Gatorade Frost Glacier Freeze and printed out a Fortnite slurp juice sign. I also put out a meat, cheese and cracker tray, along with a cookie tray.

Here is a list of the things I used:

  • Silver / gray bag and gray tissue paper (A box would also work)
  • balloon
  • Any Fortnite image of your choice
  • toothpicks
  • tape
  • cupcakes
  • Gatorade Frost Glacier Freeze
  • Fortnite slurp juice image of your choice

These boys enjoyed the snacks and drinks. They don’t go all crazy like little kids do when they see a birthday theme that they really like, but I know that they appreciate my effort. It just looks better, than if I had thrown everything on the table and said, “Here ya go!”

If this was not enough, I had one more surprise up my sleeve!

I have seen a few of these pizza boxes of “dough” online, and I thought I would give it a try. Here is a list of the things I used:

  • Empty, unused pizza box
  • Markers
  • Tape
  • Money – various bills and quarters

Basically I just wrote a message in top part of the pizza box and spread the money out on the bottom part of the box. I ended up taping down a few of the bills so they would stay down. The quarters represented the pepperoni. I only had a few quarters though, and I would advise having a few more. They help the bills stay in place.

Later that night, I had our older son Carlos ask if they could go get some pizza. My husband and I played along and sent them to get pizza. Carlitos took some of the boys with him and some of them stayed here. He picked up two pizzas and then came in the back door, where I had the “dough” pizza waiting. Carlitos put the dough pizza on top of the other pizzas and brought them in the to the dinning room and placed them on the table.

All the boys proceeded to tell Jose that he needed to have the first slice, since he was the birthday boy. Jose came into the dinning room, opened the first box and was a little shocked…..but then came the big smile.

I thought this was a fun way to gift money for a teen’s birthday. I also think it was a good idea to stack the pizzas and have him open it, so that way would not be handing him what felt like an empty pizza box. All in all Jose had a good birthday. 🙂
