Farmer House Cookies

This is my grandmother’s recipe for Farmer House Cookies. I’m not sure where these cookies came from or how they got their name. I made them for the first time and the cookies were great! They are similar to sugar cookies, but farmer house cookies are fluffy and lighter.

Here are the recipe and instructions the way they were given to me:

Farmer House Cookies – From Evelyn Anderson

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

cream together

2 eggs

1 cup sour cream

1 T. vanilla

1/2 t. baking soda

4 t. baking powder

1/2 t. salt

4 1/2 cups flour

Mix all together. Chill dough several hours or overnight. Roll and cut out. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 minutes. Frost cookies.

As I made this cookie recipe, I did cream the butter and sugar together first, and then I added all the other ingredients. I ended up letting the dough chill in the refrigerator over night. The dough was a little sticky, but it was very good dough. I was sure to flour my rolling surface and my rolling-pin a couple of times. I did not roll all the dough at once, I rolled it 3 to 4 sections. In between sections, put the rest of the dough back in the refrigerator to keep it chilled. Makes 40-45 nice round cookies.

Frosted and decorated for Christmas

These are frosted and decorated for a snowy day or a winter day. Emily says these sprinkles look like little snow balls.

David took a little bite out of one of these cookies while I had them sitting out on the kitchen table. Kids love it when their mommies bake cookies! These are frosted and decorated for Valentine’s Day.

And these are frosted and decorated for the 4th of July.

They are even good to eat without frosting!

So far, the kids have all given the cookies good reviews!

“These are the best cookies I’ve ever had!” ~ Ashley

I asked Carlitos if he liked the cookies. His reply was, “No, I don’t like the cookies, I LOVE them!”

I hope you all enjoy this recipe for Farmer House Cookies. The next time I talk to my grandma, I will have to ask her where she got this recipe from and how these cookies got their name. 🙂

  1. How thick did you roll your dough? About how big were your cookies? Thank you for your help!
