There are lots of cool “food cakes” out there that are great ideas for birthday gifts…especially for teenage boys! This post is a little bit about my try at making a “food cake.” 🙂
My son was turning 16, and I knew he would be having some friends over to stay the night for his birthday. I had been wanting to try to make a food cake for a few months now and I thought this was the perfect time to do so.
Here is what is included in the food cake:
- 9 cans of Dr. Pepper
- 4 cans of Pringles
- 4 bottles of Powerade
- 1 box of nerds
- 1 box of skittles
- 1 pack of gum
- 1 package of fun sized Milky Way bars
- You will also need some cardboard, ribbon and tape.
These are the steps I took to build the food cake:
- Step 1: I started off with the cans of soda to form the base of the cake. I placed the cans on top of a big piece of cardboard (I used a brown cardboard box.) and then I arranged them in a circle. I put some cans in the middle of the circle too. Next I traced a line around the cans on the cardboard. Cut out your circle and replace cans when finished cutting.
- Step 2: For the second tier of the cake I did the same thing as in step 1, but with the cans of Pringles. Place them on cardboard, trace and cut. You may place tape on the bottom of the cardboard before putting in on top of the cans of soda. Then put your four cans of Pringles onto the center of the cardboard. Make sure to push them closely together. (There will be some cardboard still showing in four places on the outer edge, we will use this space later.)
- Step 3: For the third tier, I did not use a cardboard base. I simply arranged the four Powerade bottles on top of the Pringle cans.
- Step 4: Next I secured the three tiers with curling ribbon.
- Step 5: I put tape on the fun sized Milky Way bars and attached them to the second tier cardboard. There should be four small spaces of cardboard showing on the outer edges, that is where I placed the Milky Way bars. You may be able to see in the picture below
- Step 6:For the bottom two tiers I used a wider type of fabric ribbon to wrap around both of the cardboard bases. That way, the cardboard would not be showing. You can use tape or hot glue to secure the ribbon. ( I used tape.)
- Step 7: For the cake topper, I taped the 2 boxes of candy and the gum together. Then tied curling ribbon around them. I also attached a little piece of white cardboard with the number 16 written on it, since it was my son’s 16th birthday. I just placed the topper on the third tier of Powerade. You could also tape it down if you’d like.
Well, that was my first “food cake.” Hope you enjoy! What I like best is that it was a creative way to give food as a birthday present. 🙂
